Samsung Foldables: From Rumor to Reality
From Rumor to Reality
In 2016, rumors claimed Samsung would release two foldable phones with AMOLED displays, 3GB RAM, a microSD slot and built-in batteries. The two models were said to use Snapdragon 620 and Snapdragon 820. Those phones never released.
Samsung later unveiled the Galaxy Fold in 2019. It came with 12GB RAM and 512GB of internal storage. There is no microSD expansion slot. The device uses two built-in batteries totaling 4,380 mAh. In some regions it used Snapdragon 855; the global variant also centered on Qualcomm silicon rather than Exynos.
Current Foldable Lineup
If you look at what Samsung is offering today - you will see the Galaxy Z Flip5 and the Z Fold5. Both released in 2023. No microSD expansion here either, but the Fold5 can go up to a whole terabyte of storage, which is impressive. The Fold5 gets 12GB of RAM, while the Flip5 settles for 8GB. So, depending on what you need, there’s a choice—but you’ll have to live without expandable storage.
And just recently, at the end of 2025, Samsung decided to surprise us again with the Galaxy Z TriFold. This is a device that folds not once, but twice, opening up to a massive 10-inch inner display. Inside, there’s a top-tier Snapdragon chip and a whopping 16GB of RAM. Storage options start at 512GB and go up to 1TB, and the battery is a solid 5,600 mAh. First, it launched in Korea in December 2025, and for those of us in the US, it’s set to arrive in early 2026. So, the foldable story keeps getting more interesting.
