Apple iPhone Chips Now Manufactured by TSMC

Past and Present Makers

You remember that Samsung was the one making Apple’s A-series chips. As an example – the A7 in the iPhone 5s. That was all Samsung’s handiwork.

Beginning from the A8 back in 2014 Apple decided to switch things up and turned to TSMC – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Since then, TSMC has been the main force behind most of Apple’s A-series chips.

A9 was still partly made by Samsung manufacturer. Apple really started leaning on TSMC for almost everything that came next.

Current iPhone Silicon

Today the iPhone 15 Pro is running on the A17 Pro chip which is made by TSMC using their cutting-edge 3-nanometer process.

To give you an idea of how serious Apple is about this partnership – according to industry reports Apple basically reserved all of TSMC’s 3nm production for 2023 and 2024 years. They just want to make sure their devices have the latest and greatest.

TSMC is already working on moving to 2nm technology which should be ready around 2026. So, I’m pretty sure that the next wave of iPhones will be powered by these or even more advanced chips.

Apple and TSMC have begun broader domestic chip production in the United States, including some A-series-related work in Arizona.
